The Seba vision on diversity management
The fact that employees are different does not mean that some are ‘normal’ (white men) and others (women, ethnic minorities) are ‘disadvantaged’. A company that treats all its employees the same way can create inequality. It is not rare to hear managers say, usually in a defensive way, that ‘they have no problem because in their company all employees are treated the same way’. That is a very common indication that the problem does exist!
A clever company focuses on what employees can do or bring and turns it into an advantage. Diversity management is about the results of the organisation and the utilization of all the diverse talents available. So it is not especially about an employee’s culture or background, or about specific groups, but it observes the patterns in the skills of companies to utilize or keep aside the diverse talents. This leads to the following definition:
Diversity Management is the optimal utilization of all the diverse talents of individual
employees in favour of customer service, profit and/or results of the organisation.
The under utilization of these talents happens primarily (but not exclusively) in relation
to the factors gender, religion, age, ethnic background and disability.
Notice that this definition is inclusive and not exclusive. Diversity is not just about women or ethnic minorities or however we define the diverse groups. Diversity is about all the personnel because everybody has an identity and a culture and talents to contribute: white men as well as black women, young heterosexuals as well as older homosexuals and so on. Diversity management does not focus on who or what is different, but on the quality of organisations to gain the best results right in the middle of a context of differences. The idea is most simple! But whoever know about the processes in daily practices are aware that this is a complex task in our diverse world of the 21st century.
